The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System (CWSS) is a database hosted by theNational Park Service containing information about the men who served in the Union and Confederate armies during the Civil War. The Ulster County Genealogical Society recommends that a variety of spellings be used when searching for an ancestor, as the site is very exacting. Furthermore, they suggest that “since the soldiers frequently completed their service, and then re-entered the war under a different regiment, please be open to the possibility that your ancestor may be listed under a different regiment than your previous research may have shown.”
